About the Event

Rhonda’s lecture and trunk show, “Pigment Patchwork: How Did I Get Here?” covers her journey into the world of quilting and art quilts. She uses the term ‘Pigment Patchwork' to classify the various techniques she uses to add color and dimension to her art quilts. We will learn more about how she has refined the process of experimentation and layering using pigments of all kinds to color on fabric, as well as using stitching to add dimention to her fiber artwork.

This presentation covers initial steps and the development through each art quilt she has made. Rhonda shows examples of the progression of various designs that helps illustrate what Pigment Patchwork embodies. Her goal is to inspire others to see how easy it is to enable their own creative voice to sing.

Rhonda's life experiences provide her with an endless source of ideas and inspiration.  She grew up with a varied menagerie of pets and wild animals, cultivating her own love of them.  As a young girl she lived in Kenya, Africa, and as an adult has taken several trips back there.  She lived many years on a remote, off-grid ranch which helped reinforce her love of experimentation and discovery.

Rhonda has always liked arts and crafts and finds it very relaxing. She started quilting in 2004 when she purchased a bed quilt kit from a catalog. Her neighbor, an excellent quilter, volunteered to help Rhonda with this first fabric project (little did she know what she was getting herself into!) Rhonda quickly gravitated to art quilting and discovered that she could experiment with various techniques in her quest to create items that captured the spirit of her imagination.

She has won many awards for her art quilts and several have been published in books.  Many of her fiber art pieces have been on exhibition in the United States and worldwide.

Rhonda and her husband live on 18 acres just outside of Emporia, Kansas and she has a studio in their walkout basement. They have several rescued/adopted animals including 5 horses, 2 goats, 4 cats and a dog.
