Utilizing the medium of textiles and printmaking, Patty Kennedy-Zafred creates thought provoking narratives to develop a visual dialogue with the viewer. Her work marries a lifelong fascination with photography, history, and stitch, reflecting faces of pride and dignity, sometimes under challenging circumstances. Join us to hear Patty speak about her work, the inspiration behind her various series, and the techniques used, including hand dyeing, printmaking, and recently, quilted three dimensional accordion books.
Bio:
Utilizing the medium of textiles and printmaking, Patty Kennedy-Zafred creates thought provoking narratives to develop a visual dialogue with the viewer. The interpretation of each piece is conceived through the lens of individual experiences, memories, or perspectives. Her work marries a lifelong fascination with photography, history, and stitch, reflecting faces of pride and dignity, sometimes under challenging circumstances.
Kennedy-Zafred’s award winning work has been exhibited in major internationally recognized exhibitions, including Art of the State, Fiberart International, CraftForms, Food Justice, Womens’ Voices, Womens’ Rights, Quilt National, Visions, Artist as Quiltmaker, Fantastic Fibers, Quilts=Art=Quilts, FiberArt Now, Art Quilt Elements, New Legacies, National Fiber Directions, and numerous juried and invitational exhibitions. Her work has won major awards, including the prestigious Masters Award for Innovation at International Quilt Festival, and she was recently honored as a Master Visual Artist in Pittsburgh, as part of the Arts Legacy Project.
Her work has traveled across the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, China, and Australia, and is part of the permanent collections of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA, The Clinton Presidential Library & Museum, Little Rock, AK, The Textile Museum, Washington, DC, The Heinz History Center/Smithsonian Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, International Quilt Museum, Lincoln, NE, and San Jose Museum of Textiles, CA, as well as multiple private collections.
